Making Time for Me, Part 1

Confession.  I have a tendency to act like I have it all together, all the time… until I can’t anymore, and I have a mommy meltdown.  With 3 kids there is no more time for me anymore.  I have to make it for myself, and ask for breaks when I need them.  And trust me – all moms do!  Over the next few weeks, I will share how I am making myself a better mom by making time, every day, to take care of me.  Part 1 – safe skincare and a chance to win some for yourself!

Did you know what you put ON your body is as just as important as what you put IN your body? Beautycounter is on a mission to provide safe skincare and products to everyone. Making Time for Me with Safe Skincare

Last month, I had a mommy meltdown.  When the 4 load pile of laundry, a teething baby, a tantrum-ing 2 year old, and lack of any time to myself in I can’t remember when, hit the proverbial fan.  A round of tears later, my husband pointed out, I needed a break – and before it gets to the tears stage, next time, just ask.

The next day, I left the house for 2 glorious hours, without any kids, to run errands and get a pedicure.  But the reality is, I don’t have the ability to make that a regular occurrence. What I really needed was a way to make time for me every day, every week, on a routine basis.  A means to recharge my batteries to be on top of my game for my kids every day, without reaching my own meltdown status.

Start with Skincare

A contributing factor to my meltdown? Sheer exhaustion – and the fact that my face couldn’t hide it anymore.  For pretty much my whole life, I have taken advantage of having good skin.  I would look in the mirror and think, ‘I still look 18!’  My skincare regimen consisted of washing my face in the shower with whatever wash I was testing out at the moment, and sometimes, putting on moisturizer after.

But after 3 kids, and 34 years, I was looking my age.  I started trying new products, and asking my friends what they used.  One of my girlfriends suggested before I try anything else, I read the information at Beautycounter.  I was horrified by what I read.

Why the need for safe skincare?

The personal care industry is basically self-regulated, with the last law passed regulating chemicals used in these products in 1938! Over the last 20 years, the EU has banned or restricted the use of more than 1,300 ingredients, while the US has only banned 11.  Many of these are known toxins, linked to cancer, hormone disruption, organ damage or worse. For years, I’ve been focused on the chemicals in our food, stressing about ingesting toxins.  Our skin, as our largest organ, absorbs everything we put on it too. And while I was careful to choose safe personal care products for my kids,  I hadn’t had the same hyper-vigilence for myself.

100s of Chemicals Before Breakfast

I consider myself relatively low maintenance when it comes to personal care.  I rarely wear make-up anymore, but even when I stepped back and examined my daily routine, I was using 5-10 products every morning.  Shampoo. Conditioner. Body Wash. Face Wash. Deodorant. Toothpaste. Moisturizer. Hair product. The average woman uses 12.  That totals exposure to hundreds of chemicals before you have even sat down to breakfast.  theneverlistbw 8x10

Beautycounter has created it’s own list of more than 1,500 chemicals it will NEVER use in its products.  They call it the NEVER LIST.  In an effort to protect their consumer, they are creating safer, cleaner products, and more than that, they are supporting resources, like the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, to help consumers make safer choices.

You may recognize EWG from the annual review it publishes on safe sunscreens.  You can also use their database to review your own current personal care products.  As an example, my pediatrician recommends a certain sensitive skin body wash, which my whole family used and I had used on my kids since birth.  It has a rating of 5, moderate hazard, with cancer and allergy risks!

Try Safe Skincare with Beautycounter

I ordered the Face Collection that night, and have been using it now for about a month.  I have forced myself to make time for me by taking care of me, with 5 minutes each morning and 5 minutes each night before bed.  It’s like a little facial for myself twice a day.  I feel better, my skin looks and feels healthier… and best of all it’s safe skincare.
