I received complimentary product from Oriental Trading to facilitate this post. As always, opinions remain 100% my own.
This summer, we celebrated my 4 year old, who had never had a birthday party of her own, in true Hawaiian luau style… with a Moana birthday party theme at our local pool club. It was the perfect summer birthday party theme, and we used elements from Disney’s Moana movie, her favorite movie this year to tie everything together. From food to DIY decor, party favors and printables, find everything you need for your child’s Moana birthday party theme!
Make Way! The Ultimate Moana Birthday Party Theme
My soon to be 4 year old had never had a real birthday party of her own. She was born the day after her grandfather’s birthday, days before her aunt, and in years past, it was combined with others and usurped by moving. But after 4 years, this year, I decided no matter what, my sweet, spunky, heart of gold middle child deserved a party of her own. She declared month’s ago that she wanted a Moana birthday party theme at our local pool club. And with an August heart of the summer birthday, I couldn’t have agreed more with her theme choice.
Moana Birthday Party Theme Decor
Given the popularity of Disney’s Moana this year, I was actually surprised by the limited options available for Moana birthday party theme supplies. But it forced me to get creative and source and create my own options to fit our Moana party theme. Oriental Trading has an amazing collection of Hawaiian Luau party supplies, so I started there.
I used the Hawaiian luau supplies as the basics for the party. The tables were covered with fun Palm Tree bordered table cloths – it comes 100 feet to a roll and you cut it to fit your tables. It was a great option for us on the oversized picnic tables at our pool club. (And it also made for super easy clean up!) You can find similar Hibiscus theme table covers here.
We added color to the tables and our party goers with vibrant Hawaiian leis and loose Hibiscus flowers. The girls ended up putting them in their hair, and we used them to hide tape on banners, and stuck them in the real pineapple centerpieces (that doubled as balloon anchors too). You can get your own customizeable Moana party banner from our Moana party printables package here.
But my absolute most favorite part of the party decor? The DIY Kakamoras (tutorial to come!), upcycled from these plain coconut cups, and the Tiki Bunting. The bunting was amazing – it is 100 feet long and so much bigger and more vibrant than I expected. We hung it from the patio roof line, and around the kiddie pool. Since we were hosting our party in a shared, public space, it was great for creating a decorative separation for our party space.
Moana Birthday Party Theme Favors
For her birthday, my daughter got a Heart of Te Fiti Necklace. And of course she wanted to give one to all her friends too – so for our Moana Party Favors we made some! They were easy enough that my girls (ages 4 and 5) helped to assemble them all. You can see the complete Moana Party Favor tutorial here. We gave the girls Heart of Te Fiti necklaces and the boys these fun rubber shark tooth necklaces, added some Maui-style tribal temporary tattoos, and put them all together with fun party favor tags featuring Maui – “You’re welcome… and thank you!” Grab your own printable favor tags as part of our Moana party printables package.
The tattoos were a huge hit among geusts of all ages – adults and kids alike! In addition to putting them in the party favor bags, we also put them on all the tables, with a small cup of water and sponge.
Moana Birthday Party Theme Food
Hosting the party at the pool we opted for simple food and ordered pizza. But we did serve fun Heart of Te Fiti Cookies (tutorial to come), a giant platter of cut watermelon, and of course a Moana cake. My 4 year old picked out her cake from Big Y, our local grocery store, where they will print just about anything you can dream up on your cake.
We served all our food on party paper goods from Wal-Mart. I almost always buy them there because you can get solid colors in a huge varity of shades to match any party theme, and they come in much larger count quantities for less. For our Moana party, we used aqua colored plates and forks, hot pink beverage napkins and hibiscus print dinner napkins, all from Wal-Mart.
