You can take the girl out of the South, but you can never take the South out of the girl. This summer marks the moment I have officially lived as many years away from my home state of Texas, as I lived in it. But Southern habits are as entrenched in my DNA as ever… and when warmer days arrive, that means taking my afternoon mom moments with a giant glass of ice cold sun tea. Learn how to make sun tea in just 3 easy steps.
Modernizing Southern Sun Tea
A glass of iced tea on a hot summer day has been a Southern tradition for generations. Before the days of air conditioning, in order to keep the house and kitchen cool, Southerners even found a way to brew their tea without even turning on the stove… using the heat of the sun!
While traditional Southern tea is made with black tea and sweetened with loads of sugar, you can make a more modern, less sugar-laden version with just as much if not more flavor using . All you need is a large glass jar, water and 4-6 bags of herbal tea.
How to Make Sun Tea in 3 Simple Steps
First, you’ll need a large, glass jar. I used a 2 quart jar shown here. Fill it with clean water.
Next, add 4-6 bags of your favorite Twinings of London herbal tea. The more tea bags you add, the stronger your sun tea will be. Keep in mind, when serving the tea over ice, it will become slightly diluted, so you may want to brew it on the stronger side to start. Hang your tea tags over the edge of the jar, and seal it shut.
Finally, place your glass jar in direct sunlight for 2-3 hours. The warmer the day and more direct the sunlight, the faster your tea will brew! Pour your brewed tea over a glass of ice and serve. Your sun tea will keep in your refrigerator sealed for 2-3 days.
Twinings of London herbal teas are packed with the finest ingredients, providing the perfect balance of tastes and flavors, that your sun tea won’t even need any additional sweeteners. If you do want to sweeten it, keep it natural, and sweeten with honey or agave nectar.
