As the daughter and daughter-in-law of lifelong teachers, I know first hand just how much money teachers invest in their own classrooms out of their own pockets. So as our kids head back to school, teacher gifts that help offset any of that expense are immensely appreciated. And the best part? An extra pack of dry erase markers or highlighters doesn’t cost you that much, but collectively, they make a huge difference to your teacher and your child’s classroom.
Skip the First Day of School Apple for the Teacher
Back in the one-room schoolhouse days, students and their families were responsible for taking turns giving room and board to the teacher… and out of that legacy, the tradition of gifting an apple to the teacher was born. But today, I promise you, teachers would much rather you spend a few dollars on extra school supplies for them and your child’s classroom.
Back to School Teacher Gifts
For those of us who work in a corporate setting, you may be surprised to know that a teacher’s copy room is not equipped with an endless closet of school supplies. Every teacher reaches into their own pockets to supply (and re-supply throughout the school year) their classroom. Markers, art supplies, tissues, glue sticks and paper are among the most needed and requested classroom supplies.
And what costs your family just a few extra dollars while you are doing your back to school shopping, can cost your child’s teacher 20+x that when trying to keep up with the supplies for the whole classful of students. So this back to school, give gifts to your child’s teacher that they truly need.
This week, as my oldest heads to Meet the Teacher before her first day of Kindergarten, she is taking in packs of highlighters and dry erase markers, along with a cute card!

It’s a great opportunity for your child to tell their new teacher a little bit about themselves, as well as demonstrate their writing and literacy skills. Choose from two cards with fun puns to go with either highlighters – “Hi, I am deLIGHTed to be in your class this year!” or “The impact of a great teacher can never be ERASED” – which is a great option for dry erase markers, packs of pencils, or even extra packs of erasers!

I received a mason jar full of permanent colored markers for Teacher Appreciation Week with the message….You’ve got the Wright stuff! Play on my last name! Such great ideas, also gift cards to teacher stores, the Dollar Store, local grocery store so the teacher can purchase needed materials for science, cooking, art or any other learning activity.
Love,
Your retired teaching momđ
