I love all holidays… I love the food, the festivities, the decorations, but most of all I love all the traditions that go with holidays. And I love learning about different traditions among other families and around the world for each holiday. Growing up in South Texas, we certainly celebrated holidays differently than my in-laws in New England, and it is fun marrying holiday traditions for my kids. As you plan your Easter this week, here are my top 10 Easter Traditions for Kids and Families.
Top 10 Easter Traditions for Kids and Families
We all color eggs and have egg hunts. And most of us have visits from the Easter bunny, leaving filled baskets too. But here are some fun and unique Easter traditions around the world and from families throughout the United States to add some excitement and maybe something a little new and different to your Easter Sunday this year!
Cascarones
Cascarones, confetti-filled eggs, are a tradition dating back to ancient China when delicate shells were filled with expensive powders and perfume. Over the centuries, the tradition traveled from Europe to Mexico, and is now common throughout the Southwestern United States during Easter and spring Fiestas! Learn more about what cascarones are and how to make them from Playground Parkbench!
Easter Trees
Easter trees are a common tradition in Europe. See how Little Worlds created and decorated their Easter tree with handmade ornaments from felt. She also teaches about the importance of parent-child projects!
Easter Fires
In South Texas, around the Hill Country town of Fredericksburg, the tradition of Easter Fires dates back to the 1800s and Comanche signal fires. Today, they are a fun tradition that Texans come from miles around to witness on Easter Eve every year. They inspired our own miniature Easter Fire within these Kid-Made DIY Easter Lanterns on Playground Parkbench.
Hot Cross Buns
Hot cross buns are a spiced sweet bun with a cross on the top, and traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the UK and its various historic colonies. Eats Amazing made a fun flavor twist on this favorite Easter tradition with her Banana Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns recipe.

Resurrection Eggs
Many families use Resurrection Eggs to tell the story of Easter, the true underpinning of Christianity. I love these homemade DIY Resurrection Eggs from Frugal Fun 4 Boys. They are simple, but beautiful, and durable enough to last for years of Easter storytelling.
La Mona de Pascua Cake
La Mona de Pascua is a Spanish tradition, featuring eggs or a nest of eggs on a cake or sweet treat. It symbolizes the end of Lent and all the sweets and delicacies that so many give up for the 40 days leading up to Easter. I love this decadent chocolate twist on this Easter tradition from See Vanessa Craft, featuring a yellow cake, with a chocolate nest and eggs.
100% Naturally Colored Eggs
Everyone colors eggs for Easter… but have you ever tried doing it without any food coloring? Mama.Papa.Bubba shares 6 different recipes for 100% naturally colored eggs, producing amazing results, all from fruits and vegetables!
Italian Easter Bread
From Mexican cascarones, to Spanish La Mona de Pasqua, and on to Pane di Pasqua, or Italian Easter Bread. This traditional Italian sweet bread is shaped to form a nest for an actual colored egg! A perfect Easter dessert. Bake with Christina offers an awesome Italian Easter Bread recipe!
Plant a Resurrection Garden
Another way to teach about the Christian foundation of Easter is with a Resurrection Garden, like this one from Kids Activities Blog. Easter is all about rebirth and new life, so what better way to celebrate than with a small garden to tell the story of Christ and the origin of Easter.
Make Your Own Easter Candy
While the Easter baskets may be full of jelly beans and chocolate bunnies, you can start a fun Easter traditions for kids making your own Easter Candy, following this how-to from Kids Stuff World! I love this idea – our family holiday tradition for Christmas is baking cookies, so it would be fun to change it up by making candy as an Easter tradition.

I’d never heard of cascarones! And I totally want to try an Easter tree this year (why should Christmas have all the tree fun?! lol!)
We’ve never done an Easter tree either, but I think it would be a lot of fun! And cascarones are my favorite!
