They say we all have a twin out there somewhere… someone unrelated, who looks just like us walking around across the world, while we shuffle our kids back and forth to preschool, dance class and play dates. A doppelganger. But what if you have a doppelganger, who is related to you, walking around your very own house, just separated by a few decades in age? A mini me! In our house, so far, we have two of them…
Our Mini Me
My Mini Me
A few weeks ago, I was at the Whole Foods’ fish counter and got that creepy feeling you get when you know someone is watching you. I turned around and an older woman, blushed and apologized, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to stare – I just can’t get over how much she looks just like you!” It inspired me to share this side-by-side of Big M and me on Facebook. The two of us at about the same age, separated by nearly 30 years.
Before Big M was born, my husband and I used to contemplate what she would look like… we are both tall, with dark hair, similar complexion, and other than my light eyes and his dark ones, could pretty easily pass for brother and sister. We figured Big M would be a good mixture of the two of us… I used to pray she would get my eyes (he and his family all wear glasses or contacts and are nearly blind without them) and his teeth (me and my family all have terribly, weak enamel). And, then, she arrived.
My Mom has always said looking at Big M is like looking through a mirror back in time. She frequently slips and calls her Meghan. I didn’t see it so much at first, as I do now… but after digging through some old photos, it’s definitely been there since birth!
My hair is a little darker, but otherwise she is definitely my mini me. And while she looks just like a mini-Meghan, she definitely has more of my husband’s personality.
His Mini Me
When I was pregnant with Lil’ M and found out she was a girl too, we just assumed she would look like her sister… and thus, like me, again. And then she arrived!
Since birth, she has been his spitting image – and not that she just looks like his childhood pictures. Her profile, her nose, the shape of her head, everything except her light hair (which darkened for him around elementary school) and light eyes, looks just like him now! Whenever she sits on his lap, it cracks me up because it’s like looking at a miniature version of him, side by side. He’s lucky all his childhood photo albums are tucked away at his parents’ house, or there would be far more of these to share too! And ironically, just like Big M looks like me but has hubby’s personality, Lil’ M looks like him but definitely has my disposition.
M3?
So now we ponder whether M3 will be another mini me or strike his or her own little look and personality. Only time will tell!
Show Me Your Mini Me
I know we are not the only ones with miniature versions of ourselves underfoot. My sister and brother-in-law each have their own mini mes as well. My sister is a pretty decent mini me of my Mom (though I’m not sure either of them would ever want to admit it – they even almost share a birthday!). Several of my cousins are definitely miniature doppelgangers of their parents as well.
I’d love to see your side-by-sides with your miniatures – feel free to post them to my Facebook page or share them on Instagram, @PGPBMeghan #MiniMe. I’d love to do a round-up and give a shot out to all the parent-child doppelgangers out there!
