30 Throwback Kids Activities for Summer

Sprinklers. Bush forts. Spitting watermelon seeds. Chasing the ice cream truck.  Playing ‘Colored Eggs’ in the pool. Those are the throwback kids activities for summer I remember from my childhood.  And oh, how memorable they were.  I want to fill my kids’ summers with just as awesome memories.  For the month of June, each day, we will share a favorite throwback summer memory from our youth to share with your family.  Join in the fun – follow along all month to see all the Ultimate Throwback Kids Activities for Summer and check them all off your list!

Summer Like It’s 1993

This June, treat your kids to a summer from your youth.  Back in the day, we spent summers at my grandparents’ pool, endless hours playing pool games, planning skits, building forts, and so much more.

Week 1

Up first, a definite old school family favorite. Get the whole family out in the backyard for Badminton from Something2Offer.

This one brings back so many memories… the hours I spent trying to rule the Four Square court in elementary and junior high school are too many to even think about counting.  Thanks to Julie at My Mundane and Miraculous Life for this throwback fun!

Four Square Throwback Summer Activities for Kids

Week 2

Who says you can’t learn and play at the same time? This throwback classic has a fun literacy twist: Red Light Green Light from Growing Book by Book!

Nothing says throwback summer like a hula hoop! And after finding an assortment of them at the Dollar Store, we turned them into 5 awesome summer games, right here on Playground Parkbench!

Another classic, favorite kids activity for summer? Bubbles!  Make it a hands-on learning activity with homemade solution and blow bubbles with household objects! What will blow the best bubbles?

One of my all time favorite summer activities is going strawberry picking!  I did it growing up as a kid in the summer, and now I do it with my kids too.  Fun for all ages, with lots of fruit to show for it – you’ll need these 50+ ways for storing, prepping, cooking and eating all the strawberries too!

Week 3

Every throwback summer should included a road trip! And the backseat entertainment should definitely be screenfree… how about this awesome printable Road Trip I Spy game from Sunny Day Family!?

For the occasional rainy day, or when you need to come in and get out of the sun, my mom always brought us into the kitchen to bake! Rice Krispie treats were a household favorite, and these Red, White and Blue Treats are perfect for the summer!

Who remember flying paper airplanes as a kid? This read it, make it activity from Sunny Day Family is a classic, and the recommended book even includes super cool paper for making awesome paper airplanes.

Tie-dye, beach towels and watermelon are all summer classics… put them all together and you’ve got an amazing throwback summer classic! I just adore these Watermelon Tie-Dye Beach Towels from Having Fun At Home.
