Holiday Party Games – Jingle Bell Toss

Sharing is caring!

Confession… this *may* be inspired by my college tailgating days.  I knew these miniature red cups would come in handy this holiday!  First, I turned them into a holiday version of cup and ball, and today, we have more holiday party games: Jingle Bell Toss! If you love this, be sure to check out a year of kids party games too.

Jingle Bell Toss - A Holiday Party Game for Kids Pin

Holiday Party Games – Jingle Bell Toss

This one is a blast for toddlers, preschoolers and grown-ups alike!  It cost less than $10 in craft supplies, and I made it in less than 5 minutes.  It was a huge mommy win (except for setting it up for the first time in the playroom directly under the napping baby’s nursery).  The girls were thoroughly entertained with tossing, chasing and celebrating successfully landing their jingle bells in the cups.

Jingle Bell Toss Supplies

The best part is the supplies necessary to create this festive holiday party game are minimal and super affordable.

Jingle Bell Toss Supplies

Supplies:

24 mini red cups
2 pieces of cardboard, foam board or canvas
Small jingle bells
Hot glue

Cost: Less than $5
Prep Time: Less than 5 minutes
Clean-Up Time: None

Making Your Holiday Party Game

Arrange 10 mini red cups like bowling pins on your board of choice.  I used two small canvases I had leftover from our Art History series, but you can literally use anything that will support the weight of the cups and you can prop at a slight angle.

Place hot glue around the bottom edge of the cup, and affix cups to board.  Repeat for second board.

Jingle Bell Toss Construction

Flip your board over and a hot glue two cups to the top two corners of the underside of your board, creating small legs.  This will prop the board at a slight angle during play. Or watch the video tutorial (and 5 Ways to Play Jingle Bell Toss) below!

Time to Play Jingle Bell Toss!

Set the boards up directly across from each other with several feet in between.  Have players stand behind the board on either side with a handful of jingle bells.  Toss bells underhand and try to get your bells to land in the cups on the other side!

5 Ways to Play Jingle Bell Toss

This post has been shared so many times now (over 100,000!!!), but I get one question more than any other…. how do you play? What are the rules? The truth is, at first, the kids just had a blast throwing bells at cups, but as they have gotten older, we have devised a few ‘official’ methods. See all 5 Ways to Play Jingle Bell Toss, including rules and scoring methods here.

I must admit, I think I had as much fun playing this as the girls did!  Big M (age 4) was really getting the hang of it.  Lil’ M (age 2) thought it was fun just throwing the bells up in the air and chasing the misses.

You can play either way – though I recommend using the mini cups and gluing them to a playing board since with the bells you aren’t filling them with liquid. It makes it easier for the kids to play too without having to set up the cups over and over.

I have this all set to play at our family Christmas but I do not understand how you win this. Do you play teams or as individual members? Is it timed? Is it the team or person who gets the most bells in the cups?

Reply
Meghan December 24, 2016 - 10:55 am

There are no official rules – so you can choose how you want to determine the winner. It’s inspired by beer pong, where you play in pairs and whoever gets one in every cup first wins. You can time it and count who gets the most to speed things up as well.

I love this idea. Thank you for the clear instructions as to how to construct the two boards. I am however not sure how it is played? Do the players toss all bells at once? Where do they stand in relationship to the two boards? Do two players play at the same time? Thanks again.

Reply
Meghan October 16, 2016 - 1:01 pm

Hi Tanya, as it was admittedly inspired by my college days of ‘Beer Pong’, I set the boards up opposite one another, with a 5-8′ in between them. The girls stood behind each board and took turns tossing the bells one at a time, back and forth. You an move the boards closer or farther apart depending upon the age of the players.

Tina July 11, 2016 - 11:00 am

What size board? It has to be a minimum to meet the width of the back row of cups, right? Great idea!
