Pot o’ Gold DIY Piggy Bank

Irish legend holds that a pot of gold can be found at the end of a rainbow, guarded by leprechauns.  I prefer to equip my kids with their own financial savvy, and instead of searching for fairy tale gold, encourage them to make their own luck by filling their pots themselves!  So for this St. Patrick’s Day, Big M (age 4) and I created this simple, Pot o’ Gold DIY Piggy Bank.

Pot o' Gold DIY Piggy Bank

Pot o’ Gold DIY Piggy Bank

After two years of Coin Wars fundraising at her preschool and one intense discussion over the holidays about why Santa wouldn’t be bringing her the $400 Frozen Power Wheels in the toy catalogue, Big M is beginning to come to grips with the concept of money.  To that end, we are starting her on a small weekly allowance to begin teaching hands-on lessons about money, saving and making smart purchases.  Where better to save than her very own pot o’ gold DIY piggy bank!

DIY Piggy Bank Supplies

This is a super simple DIY project, requiring a few basic supplies.  All in, I made this for less than $5.

DIY Piggy Bank Supplies for St Patrick's Day

Supplies

Ball wide-mouth pint jar
Black acrylic paint
Mod podge
Sponge brush
Assorted colored pipe cleaners
Hot glue
Piggy bank lid insert or heavy card stock
Black ribbon (optional)

Cost: Less than $5

Prep time: Less than 5 minutes

Clean-up time: Less than 5 minutes

Make Your DIY Piggy Bank

To create your pot o’ gold DIY piggy bank, begin by painting the inside of your jar with black acrylic paint.  It will likely require two coats of paint, with dry time between coats, to completely cover the interior of the jar.  Once the paint is try, paint over it with two layers of Mod Podge to prevent the paint from chipping or flaking off when you drop coins in the bank.

Next, remove the solid lid insert and replace it with a piggy bank insert. If you don’t have one, or like me, bought ones too small to fit your wide mouth jar (oops!), you can trace the solid lid insert on cardstock, cut a slit in it and affix the cardstock to the interior of the lid rim.

Then, create the rainbow over your pot o’ gold using assorted, colored pipe cleaners.  Big M gathered the colors of the rainbow and handed them to me to hot glue to the sides of the lid.

Once they rainbow was in place, I further secured it by wrapping the lid with black ribbon, held in place with hot glue.  This also hid the rough ends of the pipe cleaners.  It’s optional, but gives the piggy bank a more finished look.

Such a cute idea. My daughter is always finding money everywhere and we don’t have a piggy bank for her yet so I know she’d love to make one.

Making a money box with your child is a great way to help begin to understand about where money comes from. We will never stop searching for the end of the rainbow though, as well just never know!
Thanks for sharing this fun activity as part of our blog hop.
