Quick Tip Tuesday… Ziploc those Leftovers!

Before there were Pinterest and ‘Life Hacks’, before there was Martha Stewart Living, and even before there were Hints from Heloise… there was my Grandmother.  The oldest of six children, mother to eight, grandmother to 17, and great grandmother to 13 and counting, she was our family’s personal walking encyclopedia of helpful household tips.  She was also a professional baker, making hundreds of wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes for more than three decades.  With a constant houseful, endless mouths to feed, and cakes to bake, her advice was developed out of efficient necessity.

One of my favorite space saving kitchen tips is to use Ziploc bags for everything instead of Tupperware or glad ware.  Gallon-size hold more, can be more easily vacuum-sealed for long-term freezer storage, and when laid flat, take up far less space in your refrigerator or freezer.  They also work much better for thawing.  This tip is especially useful during the holidays or big family get-togethers when it seems as though there is never enough room in the refrigerator!

To easily fill a Ziploc and keep the seal section clean, roll the top of the bag down over a jar, glass or measuring cup.  This will also support the bag and hold it open while you fill it.  Once it’s filled, press out as much air as you can, lay it flat, and store it away… until 7 or 8pm on Thanksgiving, when everyone who swore they would never eat again starts scavenging for leftovers.
