Life-Size Bunny Hop Board Game

Despite Easter being less than a month away, it snowed here again this week… and since moving to New England nearly 10 years ago, I have seen more than my fair share of egg hunts amidst patches of snow, it’s always important to plan indoor fun for Easter, just in case! This life-sized, Bunny Hop Board Game is a great way to channel that chocolate bunny-induced sugar high.

Indoor Fun for Easter

Big M got Candyland for Christmas and quickly became obsessed.  The week between Christmas and New Year, she easily logged 10 games a day with my Mom. It’s also been a great means of working on color recognition with Lil’ M. But facing yet another cold day stuck indoors, I decided to turn their new favorite board game into a more active, life-size version.  Minimal supplies required, and setting it up was as much a part of the fun and learning process as playing!

Creating the Bunny Hop Board Game

To make our life-size board game, I planned to use the same playing cards from Candyland for moving around the board, aka our family room and playroom.  I pulled 8-10 sheets of construction paper in each of the colors found in Candyland: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.  That and painters’ tape were all I needed to create our playing field.

Supplies:

Construction paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
Painters’ tape
Candyland cards

Cost: Less than $5
Prep Time: Less than 30 minutes
Clean-Up Time: Less than 10 minutes

I cut all the sheets of construction paper in half, and stuck a piece of painters’ tape across the top.  Big M was eager to help, and had as much fun laying out the playing spaces, following the color pattern, as she did eventually playing the game!

Building Easter Board Game

As the path got longer and longer, she would walk all the way down it, and all the way back, adding one space at a time, requesting what color she needed next upon her return.

She pointed out that in the real Candyland there are shortcuts – so we added the Butterfly Tunnel, the same one we used in our Obstacle Course last week, to create a shortcut in the playroom.  We also marked the end of the game with the pop-up tent castle.  You can use anything, and even create the shortcut with different color paper – we just used the toys we already had in the playroom.

Playing the Bunny Hop Board Game

To play, the girls took turns drawing cards, just like in Candyland, and moving to the next colored space that matched the card.

As you may notice across all my posts, Big M is often fully accessorized.  When it came time to play, she was sporting her bunny ears, and so we added to the action of the game by bunny hopping across the spaces.

Lil’ M (age 2) lost interest about half way through and just wanted to crawl back and forth through the tunnel, but Big M would have played for the rest of the afternoon, and already asked when we can play again!

This looks such a fun game! We don’t usually have snow at Easter over here in Ireland but we often have wind and rain, so we are always in need of good indoor games as well in the Easter holidays.

It’s always so sad to have to cover up those pretty Easter dresses with coats and rain boots! This one was a winner for sure – let me know how it goes 🙂

Thanks so much, Emma! I was pretty desperate to not sit and play ANOTHER round of Candyland – this was the perfect compromise!
