DIY Man Cave Gifts – Personalized Coasters

With the move to our new, forever house, everyone in the family got exactly what they wanted… The girls got a great new playroom and a yard to play in.  I got the kitchen I’ve always wanted.  And hubby got his man cave.  He has been plotting his man cave for as long as I can remember, and saving ticket stubs and sports paraphernalia for it since before we met more than 10 years ago.  His goal was to have it all organized and ready in time for opening NFL weekend last weekend.  To commemorate the occasion, the girls and I made him these coasters, personalized with all his favorite teams, as housewarming, man cave gifts!

Our personalized coasters were easy enough to make, the Ms could do at least some of it!  You could of course make them as a grown-up craft with a little more finesse, but I love their kid-made touch.

Supply List

To create these personalized fan coasters, you will only need a few basic craft supplies.

Supplies

White ceramic tiles
Sharpie oil-based paint markers
Contact paper
White felt
Hot glue
Scissors
X-Acto Knife

Cost: Less than $10
Prep Time: Less than 30 minutes
Clean-Up Time: Less than 5 minutes

You can find white, ceramic tiles at your local big box hardware store – I get mine at Lowe’s or Home Depot, and they run about $0.16 each.  That’s right – our set of 5 personalized coasters main material cost me less than $1!

The most expensive part of this project is the oil-based paint markers.  You have to use oil-based paint markers for the coasters to be waterproof.  The markers typically run several dollars each, and at most craft stores, you can buy individual markers by color.  I bought two colors to represent each of my husband’s favorite teams – and fortunately, there was a lot of color overlap.

How To Make Personalized Man Cave Coasters

Step 1: To start, you will need to find the various sports logos you want to use online, save them, resize them to fit on your tiles and print them.  The tiles are 4.25″ square.  I resized my logos in Powerpoint and printed them all on one page.

Step 2: Place your printed logos under your contact paper, and trace the outlines onto the contact paper.  Be sure to trace them on to the top-side of the contact paper and not on the backing (preggo brain here made that mistake!).

Step 3: Using scissors, cut out your traced logos from the contact paper.  For more intricate logos, you may need an X-Acto knife to remove small interior pieces.

Step 4: Remove the contact paper backing, and carefully position your logo on the center of your white tile.  Be sure to press it down firmly, smoothing any wrinkles or air bubbles out, and making sure all the edges are adhered to the tile.

Step 5: Hand the tiles over to your kiddos with the appropriate colored oil-based paint markers, and let them scribble away!

Step 6: Allow paint to fully dry (2-3 hours), then carefully remove contact paper from the tile.

Step 7: Cut 4″ felt squares (slightly smaller than tile), and hot glue to back to tile.  Voila!  Custom, personalized man cave gifts, for your favorite sports fan!

The girls were so excited to give these to the hubby yesterday before bed, and he immediately laid them out on his new bar, ready for use!  If Dad isn’t a sports enthusiasts, you can use the same technique to create monograms, commemorate a special date, or even a favorite beverage or brand.

If you enjoyed this post, you might also enjoy one of last year’s holiday favorite, Custom Photo Coasters.  You can find both of these, and all our favorites from around the web on our Gift Ideas and DIY boards on Pinterest.
