Backyard Golf Ball Hunt

For us, spring means green grass, buds on the trees, daffodils and tulips blooming, puddle jumping, Easter, and… golf.  Before kids, my girlfriends and I golfed regularly. Post kids, my golf bag has been collecting a thick layer of dust in the corner of the garage.  But this Spring, we are dusting it off and using the contents as inspiration for a multi-week series featuring crafts, fine motor skill challenges and active outdoor fun.  First up in our series a simple kids party game for the season – Backyard Golf Ball Hunt!

Backyard Golf Ball Hunt

Backyard Golf Ball Hunt

Big M invented this game last Spring.  We were enjoying a Saturday afternoon in the backyard, and the hubby was attempting to teach Big M how to use her new toy golf set.  He hoped he could get her occupied with it, while he practiced his short game.  She had other plans… having just celebrated the first Easter where she was really into the Easter egg hunt, she thought it was way more fun to go retrieve all his balls.  So we made a game out of it, that she then requested to play almost every time we went outside last Spring, Summer and Fall.

Supplies:

Bucket
4-6 golf balls
Chipping Wedge

Cost: Free – Less than $5 (we used old balls, pulled a club from our bag and a sand pail we got at the Dollar Store)
Prep Time: None
Clean-Up Time: None

The game is simple – I chip the balls out around the yard, she races out to retrieve them.  The key is safety!  She has to stay on the patio with her bucket while I hit them out, until I say, “Go!”  Then, she runs out to go find them all, counting as she goes.  She dumps them out at my feet, and heads back to the patio.  Repeat.  She will literally play this game for an hour.  Occasionally, she likes to take a turn at trying to hit the balls herself too!  Maybe we have a future little Tiger in the making…

I golf!

This game should be even more fun this Spring, now that Lil’ M will be racing to find the balls too.  By the Fall, she was tagging along like her big sister’s shadow.  If you are a golf lover, or have a husband who is, this is a great game to play with your kids in the backyard that you will all enjoy!

March Outdoor Play Challenge

If you enjoyed this outdoor activity, I partnered with 30+ other members of the Kids Activity Blogger Network to put together a daily Outdoor Play Challenge for every day in March.  Hosted by Building Blocks and Acorns, you can find all the posts for the month as well as a printable calendar of all the activities.  I know in lots of places it is just finally warming up, so feel free to play catch up and try these all out next month too!

Great idea! Must be inspired by Easter 🙂 There’s no reason we can’t go on hunts year round — brilliant!
